WE Tech Generators Ordered by Tianjin Xingang Shipyard

WE Tech Solutions has been contracted by Tianjin Xingang Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in China to deliver four of its direct drive permanent magnet shaft generator solutions for a series of new Post-Panamax pure car truck carriers recently ordered by Wallenius Lines. Equipment delivery will commence in November 2014. Each 200m long and 36.5m wide vessel will have a cargo capacity equivalent to 8,000 cars.

Wallenius Lines continuously strive to have the most energy efficient machinery available in their ships and with WE Tech’s WE Drive and the direct drive permanent magnet shaft generator technology the energy efficiency levels of the machinery reach unprecedented levels in the marine industry, says WE Tech.

With its active front-end low harmonic drive technology, the WE Drive allows the shaft generator to operate over the full main engine speed range while generating electricity for the vessels electrical network with high efficiency over the entire range. This feature is particularly prominent in electrical part loads – the normal electrical load condition in any ship.

With the WE Drive and direct drive permanent magnet shaft generator in power take out (PTO) mode, the available power for the vessel’s electrical network is up to 1.5 MW, generated by a fuel efficient 2-stroke main engine. In this mode the auxiliary generators are not running. As the operating hours of the auxiliary generators thus are drastically reduced, significant savings are achieved. Reduced running hours also reduce the need for maintenance.

In power take in (PTI) mode, the WE Drive converts auxiliary generator power to propulsion power by employing the direct drive permanent magnet shaft generator as a motor. By utilising the PTI feature in this boost mode, the WE Drive can provide boost power of up to one MW directly to the propeller shaft, supporting the main engine when required, thus enabling low-load optimization of the main engine.
