Global Patriot Fatal Shooting Outrages Egypt

Published Jan 12, 2011 11:13 AM by The Maritime Executive

The body of Mohammad Fouad was exhumed for forensic analysis after being killed by security forces aboard the U.S. Navy contracted vessel, Global Patriot, which was transiting the Suez Canal when it was approached by small boats that conduct informal commerce in the waterway. The navy has already expressed regret for the shooting and promises to take care of Fouad’s family.

The ship’s security force said it fired warning shots after verbal warnings were ignored. A spokesperson with the National Security Council said the United States will fully investigate the incident.

Egyptian foreign minister, Aboul Gheit, said Egyptian ports are not open for gunfire and that the entire country is upset by the incident.
