SUNDIAL MARINE Launches 50th Hull

This past April, 2007, SUNDIAL MARINE CONSTRUCTION AND REPAIR, INC. launched its 50th new construction hull. April’s launch is the seventh of eight double hulled petroleum barges contracted by the US Navy. SUNDIAL MARINE won the eight barge contract in nationwide bidding during 2003. All eight barges, designed by SUNDIAL MARINE, are 199 feet by 54 feet, and carry approximately 14,000 barrels of product. They are ocean going, built to ABS standards, carry an ABS load line, and various tonnage certificates. The US Navy barges are designed to carry light oils, but are equally suited for heavy oils in the bunkering trade. The new barges are a five tank design, without a centerline bulkhead. Transverse bulkheads are corrugated. Each barge has a deadweight of approximately 660 tons. Thus far, the barges have been put into service in Japan, Norfolk, Va., and the Pacific Northwest’s Puget Sound area.

Three days after the launch of the latest hull for the US Navy, SUNDIAL MARINE laid the keel for its next new construction project, a new bunker barge for The Jankovich Company, from San Pedro, California. This vessel will be an ocean going barge for local use in their bunkering operations. Delivery is scheduled for the fall of 2007.

SUNDIAL MARINE is organized primarily for the purpose of ship and vessel repair, conversion and construction. The company has successfully served this purpose for 37 years. SUNDIAL MARINE has grown and evolved to meet the dynamic and changing needs of the marine industry and its customers. Beside their new construction projects, SUNDIAL MARINE is currently in the middle of converting a third, Columbia River grain barge, into a double hulled petroleum barge. This is an “internal” double hulling, with tanks being constructed within the existing barge hull structure. It will also have a raised cargo trunk. Once completed, the barge will carry approximately 26,000 barrels of product in trade on the Columbia River. SUNDIAL MARINE is currently in discussion with a number of customers who plan to double hull existing single hulled petroleum barges, as well. These barges will be “external” double hulls, with a new barge being built around the existing single hull.

SUNDIAL MARINE began business 37 years ago primarily as a marine construction yard, supplying the Columbia River basin with grain and petroleum barges, new tugs and fishing vessels. As the company expanded, SUNDIAL MARINE has undertaken the repair and conversion of various sized vessels, from 60 foot long tugboats, up to 300 foot long barges. The repair program includes construction and repair of Government ships and barges for the U.S. Coast Guard, the Port of Portland (Oregon), the Army Corps of Engineers, and the US Navy.
