Marathon Runners Raise Money for Seafarers

Published Apr 16, 2014 3:11 PM by The Maritime Executive

Sailors’ Society’s 2014 London Marathon team has brought in thousands for the maritime charity and donations are still pouring in.

For 12 of the 20 strong team, this was the first time they had taken on the might of a marathon and what a day to remember!

The sun shone down as the runners took to the streets in the 34th London Marathon, cheered on by crowds of thousands and following in the footsteps of eventual winner and world record holder Wilson Kipsang and the UK’s very-own debutant Mo Farah.

The Sailors’ Society team has raised £33,000 to date and are on track to raise £38,000 towards the charity’s worldwide network of port chaplains.

Temi Binitie, Senior Chartering Executive at AET Tankers UK Ltd and founder of Afrimari said, “As a Sailors’ Society Ambassador, I was eager to increase awareness of the Sailors’ Society’s work and fulfill my goal of running a marathon for the first time. Recognizing that the donations will help transform the lives of seafarers and their families makes the achievement all the sweeter”.

The runners enjoyed a well-deserved post-race massage and celebrated with friends and family at Pall Mall’s magnificent Institute Of Directors, just around the corner from the finish line.

“Our runners have endured months of training and it’s been wonderful to see them achieve their goal and cross that finish line – congratulations to them all!” said Holly Evans, Sailors’ Society Events Fundraiser.

“They’ve embraced the challenge of fundraising with great enthusiasm and the record funds raised to date are testament to their hard work. We are so grateful to them and their supporters for their generous donations”.
