World's First LNG-Powered Containership Launched

On Saturday, April 18 General Dynamics NASSCO launched the Isla Bella, the world's first LNG-powered containership from its San Diego-based shipyard.

The 3,100TEU containership, part of a two-ship contract, was built for TOTE, a leading logistics and transportation company. When delivered, the ships will be the cleanest of their kind and size anywhere in the world, says NASSCO. It was also NASSCO's 100th launch.

The vessels will operate on LNG, which will significantly decrease emissions while increasing fuel efficiency as compared to conventionally-powered ships. The LNG-powered ships will also include a ballast water treatment system.

Upon delivery in late-2015, the Jones Act-qualified ships will operate between Jacksonville, Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

JAXPORT in Jacksonville is the Number 1 port for trade with Puerto Rico. Local media reports JAXPORT CEO Brian Taylor saying Jacksonville has a lot to gain by using LNG as a fuel and commodity. "Ports and regions that embrace the LNG opportunities before us stand to gain the most in terms of jobs, economic growth and business connectivity with communities around the world."
