Wilkinson named Massachusetts Maritime Academy 2010 Maritime Person of the Year

Wilkinson named Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s 2010 ‘Maritime Person of the Year.'

Geoffrey C. Wilkinson was recently named Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s 2010 ‘Maritime Person of the Year’ for his career of excellence, innovation and service to the maritime industries. He will be awarded the Captain Emery Rice Medal, named for an 1895 graduate and hero of World War I, on Nov. 5 at the 16th annual Admiral’s Ball, at the InterContinental Hotel in Boston.

The ball is the Academy’s largest annual fundraiser and aims to address $5,000,000 in unmet financial need among cadets every year. All proceeds benefit Emery Rice scholarships.

“With the Board’s choice this year of Mr. Wilkinson, an alumnus of Massachusetts Maritime Academy, we continue the tradition of recognizing excellence. It will be an honor to have Mr. Wilkinson accept the Emery Rice Medal,” said Captain Peter Lawrence, Chairman of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Foundation Board.
Wilkinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering from the school in 1972 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Public Administration degree in 2003. Prior to joining George T. Wilkinson, Inc., which his father founded in 1951, he served as Second Assistant Engineer for Mobil Oil Corporation. Among his many professional licenses, Wilkinson holds both a 2nd Assistant and 3rd Assistant Engineer’s License from the U.S. Coast Guard for Motor Vessels.

An active member of many professional and community associations, Wilkinson serves on the Boards of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Foundation, Hingham Institution for Savings and the Power Flame Inc. Agents Council. He previously served as Chairman of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Foundation Board from 1991 to 1999 and Chairman of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Board of Trustees from 1997 to 1999. He is also a past two-term Trustee of the Academy Board.

The Academy is the oldest continuously operated maritime academy in the United States and provides four-year bachelor’s degrees in marine engineering, marine transportation, marine safety & environmental protection, international maritime business, facilities engineering and emergency management.
