Shipyard Hijos de J. Barreras delivered to companies WesternGeco and Baleria seismic vessel “WG Vespucci” and ferry-boat “Abel Matutes” respectively, which are number 1660 and 1661 of the vessels built in the shipyard, after the trial period they were subjected to.

Ferry-boat “Abel Matutes” was developed through an R&D&I program between the respective technical departments of Barreras and Baleria.

The new ferry-boat has 11 decks, five of them plus one car-deck being designed for cargo purposes, and the other five being superstructure ones. “Abel Matutes” is 190 meters long and 26 meters beam, and has a capacity for 900 people –crew and passengers included. Furthermore, a modular system allows 2,235 lineal meters for trailers and 1,835 lineal meters for cars in the hold.

Like in the other vessels of the series, the energy consumption has been optimized. Propulsion has been solved with two main motors of 9,000 kW each that allow a service speed of 22 knots. These state-of-the-art motors minimize the level of emissions, which is very much below the one required by the environmental regulations.
The bow is equipped with two electrically-driven controllable-pitch transverse propellers of 1,000 kW each. In addition, the passengers' comfort when sailing is guaranteed by a set of hydraulic stabilizers with retractable wings.

Just like the other boats of the Baleria + series, the interior design is impeccable to host up to 900 people. The boat has spacious exterior terraces to enjoy the navigation comfortably.

Passengers will have at their disposal the following: self-service, video games room, first-class seats lounge, shop, phone system with 50 internal lines, and music and TV available in all cabins and lounges. There are 74 quadruple and two double cabins for disabled people, all them located on deck number 8.

The construction of the vessel was supervised by Bureau Veritas in order the new ferry achieves the highest standards in her category. Baleria's fleet renewal plan involved the construction of four vessels of a total investment of more than 350 million Euros. “Abel Matutes” is the fourth of such vessels.

On the other hand, 3D, 12-streamer seismic vessel “WG Vespucci” is the last one of a series of four seismic vessels ordered by WesternGeco to shipyard Barreras. This vessel is identical to her twins “WG Columbus”, “WG Magellan” and “WG Amundsen”, all them standing out for their inverted bow which means another milestone to Barreras as regards innovation and sophisticated and state-of-the-art technologies. This fourth vessel consolidates the shipyard’s position within the offshore market –one of the most competitive and highly committed to safety and environmental protection ones.

This vessel, which is 90.5 meters long and 19.00 meters beam, is the result of a technically very advanced project –the “Ulstein SX124”, carried out in close collaboration between the shipyard’s technical department, the ship-owner and Norwegian company Ulstein Design.
