Samsung Chooses STADT No-Loss Electric Propulsion

Tuesday, December 6, 2011

The world’s largest shipbuilding yard – Samsung Heavy Industries have ordered electrical propulsion system from STADT AS in Norway. It’s the patented STADT STASCHO  No-Loss Drive system that now gets a  foothold in the world’s largest shipbuilding nation.

A new generation of environmental friendly ships with LNG-electric propulsion.

Samsung has together with the IPA (Incheon Port Authority) of Korea an increased focus on developing  more sustainable propulsion technology for their ships. Reduction of CO2, NOx and fuel are important goals, together with a convert from oil to natural gas.

LNG electric is a sustainable solution.

This system enables to separate the power production from the propeller system.  The LNG fed generators will operate with a rather steady load, quite independent of how much power used on the propeller. The propellers are driven by the robust STADT electric No-Loss drive system.

Increased interest for full-electric systems.

STADT have used the last 10 years on development of this No-Loss drive system, which is their   5. generation technology. With 25 years of experience within marine electro-technologic developments, it is pleasing to see that the work can give a global meaning to the environment, and at the same time make international shipping more sustainable and gives better payback for the ship-owners, says STADT director Hallvard Slettevoll. The product range is very comprehensive, covering propeller systems from 100 kW up to 100 MW in many voltage classes from 220 V up to 15 kV. No big power transformers are used in the STADT technology, saving a lot of space, weight and losses.

STEALTH AC – Disturbance free technology in World-Class.

One of  many technological benefits with the new STADT-system is that it is completely free from any disturbances, such as electromagnetic interference- EMI,  acoustic noise and vibrations. This is properties which has high value for any type of ships. But it has an even bigger impact in military projects, something that probably will be one of many growing markets for STADT’s technology internationally, according to Slettevoll.

AC-Technology improves reliability versus DC systems.

For many years  STADT have seen that there are a direct link between unpredicted major  failures and even explosions in drives that has a incorporated big DC capacitor system inside the drives.

These capacitors and low inductive DC switching circuits with minimal insulation creepage distances, often less than  1 millimeter at up to 1000 V DC , has represented a major part of the undesired  faults, lead to limited lifetime and failure situation for those products.

In the STADT STASCHO drives, the use of DC capacitors is very much limited, and only used temporary – thus eliminating those seen problems from past generations drives.
