Somalia: Somali Pirates Kill Ship Captain

Nov 18, 2009 — There is no denying piracy off the coast of East Africa is rampant, however, in only a very few isolated cases has a crewmember of an attacked ship is killed. Unfortunately that's what apparently happened earlier this week. A Somali pirate has told Reuters that the captain of the Virgin-Islands-owned chemical tanker, MV Theresa VIII, died from gunshot wounds suffered during the attack.

Somalia: Cargo Ship Evades Second Pirate Attack of the Year

Nov 18, 2009 — For the second time this year pirates targeted the Maersk Alabama off the coast of Somalia. However, unlike the first time, the ship was able to evade capture when attacked Wednesday (11/18) morning. The Maersk Alabama is carrying an armed security detail that repelled the pirates.

Antarctica: Antarctic Tourist Ship Stuck in Ice

Nov 17, 2009 — This past Saturday weather conditions including heavy pack ice in the Weddell Sea trapped the Russian icebreaking "cruise ship" the Kapitan Khlebnikov in Antarctic waters near Snow Hill Island. According to updates from Quark Expeditions, the 101 passengers, 23 staff and 60 crew were safe at all times, and as of 15:30 local time on 11/16 the ship is finally making its way towards open water .

Somalia: Spain Meets Pirate Demands, Fishermen are Free

Nov 17, 2009 — Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced at a press conference today (11/17) that Somali pirates have released the fishing trawler Alakrana and her crew of 36 after more than a month in captivity.

Somalia: French Navy Seizes Pirate Mothership

Nov 13, 2009 — The crew of the French naval frigate Floreal on Thursday captured a suspected pirate mothership and arrested 12 Somalis about 650 nautical miles east of Hobyo in Somalia and 500 nautical miles northwest of the Seychelles islands.
