Pentagon Claims No Iranian Ships Docked in Syria, Despite Alleged Reports

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

After a report from Iranian media, the Pentagon has responded with a claim that they had no indication that any Iranian ships had docked in Syria this past weekend.

According to Reuters, Iran’s Press TV reported that two Iranian warships dock at Syria’s Port of Tartous on Saturday, February 18th. The ships were believed to be providing training for Syrian naval forces. However, Pentagon officials stated that they had absolutely no indication that this occurred at all, and believed that the ships did not even dock in Syria.

Iran is currently already at odds with the U.S., Europe and Israel over their nuclear program and impending European Union sanctions. The deployment of warships could lead to concerns that the Syria crisis could boil over into a regional conflict, if not solved soon.

The United States government claims that there is nothing striking about the latest warship deployment. It is believed to have been just a routine passage through the Suez Canal and back.
