Italian Tanker Seized by Somali Pirates off Oman

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Italian shipping company, Marnavi, announced that Somali pirates have hijacked one of their tankers off the coast of Oman with 18 crewmembers on board.

The statement released by Marnavi says that the Enrico Ievoli was seized very close to the shores of Oman with six Italians, five Ukrainians, and seven Indians onboard in the early morning hours on Tuesday.

The 138-meter long, 16,631 DWT Enrico Ievoli was carrying cargo of caustic soda to the Mediterranean from UAE when she was captured by pirates.

Naples-based Marnavi company says that Italian authorities have been notified and are in close contact with the foreign ministry.

The Enrico Ievoli seizure comes just days after Somali pirates released another Italian-owned tanker, the Savina Caylyn, after receiving a multi-million dollar ransom payment.
