Intertanko issues the Best Management Practices to deter piracy in the Gulf of Aden

Best Management Practices to deter piracy in the Gulf of Aden and off the coast of Somalia have been agreed by the shipping industry (ship owner interests, oil company and insurance interests and the IMB).

These BMPs have already been circulated within the industry, which recognizes the need to demonstrate clearly and unequivocally the parallel actions that are required of ships in terms of increasing situational awareness, increasing the visible alertness of crews, and describing the appropriate measures to deter an attack from starting or from being successful.

The document has benefited from lengthy and exhaustive consultation within the industry and with military experts, and in particular with those experienced in the special characteristics of this region and of piracy attacks. Further, it offers guidance on preparation before the transit, on the transit itself and on actions appropriate during attacks.

The industry is committed to ensuring that there is one unequivocal base document for all advice on piracy in the Gulf of Aden. These BMP do not conflict in any way with the OCIMF / INTERTANKO / SIGTTO booklet "Practical Measures to Avoid, Deter, and Delay Piracy Attacks in the Gulf of Aden and other Waters near the Horn of Africa – A Seafarers Guide”, which was recently produced and circulated free of charge. This booklet expands the written BMP document and provides more detailed information and supplementary illustrations.
