Hundreds of Seamen Trapped in Frozen Sea of Okhotsk

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Five ships and more than 500 seamen are trapped in ice as thick as 6 ½ feet, in the Sea of Okhotsk off the eastern coast of Russia.

Three of the ships have been stranded since Friday- a fishing boat, a refrigerated freighter and a scientific research vessel. All reportedly have enough food and supplies to last several weeks.

Icebreaking ships are working to free the stranded ships, but winds of up to 65 mph in the area are hindering rescue efforts.
