DEEPWATER HORIZON UPDATE: April 23, 2010

USCG Public Affairs –New Orleans states at 10:20 am April 22nd the oil rig sunk below the surface. Currently, two ROVs are in theater searching for the oil rig, which was 41 miles offshore. As of now the USCG has no information of its whereabouts or status. There is a 10 foot x 10 foot shine with patches of dark oil slowly to the northeast. Eleven skimmers are in operation on scene and dispersants have been sprayed. BP has also deployed over a million feet of containment boom in the area.

In terms of a catastrophic oil spill, as of now it’s not happening says USCG spokesperson Lt. Commander Cheri Ben-Iesau. “The potential for a massive spill was being reported by the media, but there are no signs of oil spill as of now.”

USCG will fly three sorties today to seach for the missing workers.
