Dead Newborn Found on Carnival Ship, FBI Investigates

Monday, October 17, 2011

The Carnival Dream set sail Sunday from Port Canaveral, Florida for its scheduled seven-day Caribbean cruise despite an ongoing investigation into the death of a newborn onboard.

On Wednesday, a crew member found the newborn’s body in a guest cabin, while the ship was docked in St. Maarten. The ship returned to Port Canaveral on Saturday morning where it was met by the FBI’s Evidence Response Team.

Carnival reported the incident to the FBI and officials in St. Maarten, where a 20-year-old woman, believed to be the baby’s mother has been detained. The FBI says that the mother has not yet returned to the US and will be held in St. Maarten until further investigation.

The FBI says no one has been charged. The investigation is ongoing and is receiving the full cooperation of Carnival Cruise Lines and St. Maarten authorities.
