South Korea Considering Fairness of P3

Published Mar 31, 2014 8:25 PM by The Maritime Executive

South Korea's Fair Trade Commission said on Monday that it will work to ensure fair treatment for small players in light of the P3 alliance between Maersk, CMA CGM and MSC.

An official told local media: "We have sent a letter to the Chinese antitrust authority seeking joint action on the matter."

CMA CGM has indicated that it is working to secure approval for the alliance from South Korea. The US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has already announced its approval stating that the agreement as it was unlikely at this time, to increase transport costs unreasonably as a result of a reduction in competition. This may change in the future so the commission directed staff to issue alternative reporting requirements to the P3 Agreement parties to assist in close monitoring of the agreement.

China and the EU are expected to make a decision in coming weeks.
