Prosecutors Request Indictment of Concordia Captain for Manslaughter
Italian prosecutors have officially requested an indictment of the Costa Concordia’s captain on manslaughter charges in the unfortunate shipwreck that took 32 lives last year.
The prosecutor is also asking for Francesco Schettino to be tried for causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship while the evacuation of passengers and crew was still being conducted.
A judge must decide whether to order a trial for Schettino and five others named in the indictment request, reports Fox News. The others mentioned are the two deck officers, the helmsman, and Costa Crociere’s Roberto Ferrarini
Prosecutors also said Costa Crociere, the capsized ship’s owner, has asked for a plea bargain agreement which, if accepted, could see Costa pay a $1.35 million fine.
Schettino is reportedly writing a book explaining how he allegedly averted an even greater loss of life.
