Aussies Celebrate Winter Solstice with Nude Swim

More than 700 people braved the chilly waters of the Derwent River in Hobart Australia for a morning celebration of the winter solstice.

At exactly 7:42am on Sunday, the water temperature was 11 degrees Celsius when the swimmers plunged in. The oldest swimmer was an 87-year-old woman, returning for her second time.

Spectators cheered the swimmers on as they swam for a buoy 50m out, and fire drums were set up along the beach to warm them after their dip. The police, water police and surf lifesavers were on duty, but no one needed rescuing.

"The best part was hitting the water and not backing out," said one participant.

"Naked as nature intended creatures of this universe, returning to the sea," said another.

"If this kind of cosmic philosophy can be extended to the whole world, it will become a driving force for world peace," said yet another.

The event was part of Dark Mofo, the Museum of Old and New Art's winter festival. The festival has taken Hobart by storm with tourists and locals flocking to its concerts, exhibitions and waterfront feast. It is estimated 35,000 people attended the medieval-themed banquet held over three nights as part of the two-week event.

Hobart Lord Mayor Damon Davies, who swam last year, is keen for the city to become a world renowned nude swimming destination.
