North Korea: North Korea Creates Firing Zone Near Disputed Sea Border

Dec 21, 2009 — The North Korean military has reportedly established what it is calling a "peacetime firing zone" along the disputed Korean maritime border in the Yellow Sea, and says that "all fishing boats and warships should take security measures to protect themselves."

Are Transponders the Answer to the Small Boat Threat?

Dec 21, 2009 — That's the question the vice president of Government Affairs for BOAT-US, Margaret Podlich, recently answered before the U.S. House of Representatives Coast Guard Subcommittee with a "No". About placing AIS units on all recreational vessels, Podlich said, "The challenge with AIS is that it does not provide the ability to reduce the small boat threat."

Somalia: Somali Pirates Free Greek Cargo Ship

Dec 18, 2009 — Somali pirates released the MV Delvina, and its crew of 14 Filipinos and 7 Ukrainians on Thursday (12/17). The Greek-owned cargo ship was seized in early November. There are reports that pirates received a $3.5 million ransom for releasing the MV Delvina.

Lebanon: Dozens of Sailors Missing After Ship Sinks in Mediterranean

Dec 18, 2009 — On Thursday the Panamanian-flagged cargo ship, the Danny F II capsized and sank off the northern coast of Lebanon. The ship was carrying a large crew of more than 80. Members of the maritime task force of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have so far rescued at least 35 people, and recovered 8 bodies. The remaining crewmembers are still missing.

The ship was carrying some 43,000 sheep from Uruguay to Syria when it went down in severe weather. Apparently, the search and rescue operation is being hampered by the vast number of dead sheep floating in the water.
