After presenting a brief history of MMA, its growth from ships and sail to modern day technologies, Admiral Rick Gurnon addressed what the Massachusetts Maritime Academy does best: cultivate students to excel and produce graduates who become industry leaders.

Last week, MMA Department Heads recognized graduates who have been both leaders and mentors in their fields. At the ceremony, Department Chairs read a citation for each honoree prior to their presentation of a plaque applauding dedication to the Academy and their commitment to industry.

Among the Honorees at the 118th birthday celebration of MMA were:

• Mark Mooney '86, Facilities Engineering - Following an extensive career in engineering while moving up the ranks working for various state departments in Massachusetts, Mark is currently the Senior Engineering Inspector at Liberty Mutual.

• Jeremiah Kunze '08, Emergency Management - Leveraging his current position as the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for Boston Teaching Hospitals, Jeremiah has worked to create job and internship opportunities for current MMA cadets.

• Megan Campbell '05, Marine Safety Environmental Protection - After graduating from MMA, Megan enrolled in Vermont Law School. This summer, after sitting for and passing the Bar exam, she will be working for the Washington, DC office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) helping to shape the country's National environmental policies.

• Brad Hendrick '03, International Maritime Business - Working as Senior Associate of Marine Practice at Integro Insurance Brokers of New York, Brad is helping the company rewrite the standards for service and quality in the complex risk management industry.

• Capt. Gregg Farmer '85, Marine Transportation - As Senior Pilot for the Boston Harbor Pilots, Gregg is actively involved with his industry and serves as President of the Boston Harbor Pilot Association, LLC.

• CDR John Carey '90, Marine Engineering - After graduating MMA, CDR Carey earned a Juris Doctor from New England School of Law and attained veteran status by serving two tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan. CDR Carey was honored by the Naval Science Department for his work in helping serve the Navy by better serving MMA Cadets.
