Featured MarEx Print Article: Alaskas Coming Alive

Published Jan 7, 2011 8:26 AM by The Maritime Executive

OPED by former Alaska Governor Steve Cowper from our October print edition.

This week’s featured archive MarEx print article is taken from our October edition, also featuring the leaders of the American Salvage Association on the cover. Follow along as former Alaska Governor Steve Cowper leads you to a better understanding of the energy situation in Alaska today. Says Cowper, “You’ve heard it everywhere: The Arctic is the place where the next generation of elephants is waiting to be discovered. We’re not talking woolly mammoths here. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the area north of the Arctic Circle has about 90 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil (and 1,670 tcf of natural gas).”

Of the regions studied, USGS Director Mark Myers puts Arctic Alaska at the top of the list with an estimated 30 billion barrels, not counting the seemingly untouchable Arctic National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR). But, we’re not going to steal Cowper’s thunder. Normally, this article can only be read by subscribing to the print edition THE MARITIME EXECUTIVE. Our print vehicle is the most comprehensive business journal, written for and about maritime executives. Today, however, you can click HERE to read Cowper’s opinion piece.
