Safebridge now offers a new online training course on Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS), exclusively designed for maritime pilots. As an informative course and a familiarization tool, ECDIS Training for Maritime Pilots is specifically designed for pilots operating the onboard ECDIS equipment.

The course covers both generic topics and type-specific familiarization that specifically addresses pilots’ needs. Module 1, Navigating with ECDIS, is the generic part of the course, whereas each of the other modules represent TST of individual manufacturers.

Subject areas covered in the course include an overview of ECDIS carriage requirements, electronic charts, ECDIS navigational functions, shiphandling with ECDIS, sensor integration, alert management, as well as the latest changes according to the new IHO and IEC standards. Animation and video capturing have been used throughout the course to provide the highest standard of training to the user.

By the end of the course, maritime pilots should be able to understand the navigational functions of ECDIS, direct the selection of and assess relevant information, including understanding the potential errors of displayed data and the common errors of interpretation, explain why ECDIS should not be relied upon as the sole source of navigational information and be familiar with the features that are common to all ECDIS systems.
