ClassNK Chairman and President Noboru Ueda announced to the press today that ClassNK will commit 2.2 billion yen (US$25 million) in research and funding as part of its participation in a national joint R&D program to reduce maritime greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. ClassNK’s commitment will cover more than 25% of the project’s total budget of 8.5 billion yen (US$95 million) through 2012. Today at Fincantieri’s shipyard at Sestri Ponente (Genoa), there was the launch of “Marina”, the first ultra luxury cruise ship which Fincantieri is building for the US shipowner Oceania, scheduled for delivery at the end of 2010. At the same time as the launch there was also the cutting of the first sheeting of the second sister ship, whose first section will be built initially at the shipyard of Castellammare di Stabia.

Wärtsilä Delivers Engines to South African Polar Supply and Research Vessel Wärtsilä has signed a contract with the STX Finland Oy shipyard in Rauma, Finland, to deliver four Wärtsilä 32 engines for a Polar Supply and Research Vessel. The Owner of the vessel will be the Republic of South Africa's Department of Environmental Affairs, and it will be operated by SMIT Amandla Marine, of South Africa. The vessel's crew will be trained at the Wärtsilä Land and Sea Academy in Turku, Finland.
