VETUS M4.55 Engine Now SOLAS Certified

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

The VETUS M4.55 engine has recently been SOLAS certified for installation in e.g. lifeboats.

The VETUS M.3.28, M4.15 and M.17 had already been SOLAS certified. In order to qualify for the certification, an engine has to pass several tests showing that the engine meets the demands for qualification. The engine must cease running immediately in the case the boat capsizes 360°, and must be able to start immediately after capsizing at which there must be minimal oil and/or fuel leakage. The engine must keep running with the crankshaft below the surface and be able to start at a maximum gradient of 30° and a temperature of -15° Celcius. The engine has been tested at -21°. Our basic diesel engine dealt with these circumstances as well as the capsize test easily.
