Celebrating 50 years in waterjet propulsion, Ultra Dynamics (manufacturer of UltraJet waterjets) looks forward to continuing its growth in the waterjet propulsion market.
The UltraJet story began in the mid 1950s with the formation of Dowty Marine when the early turbocraft jet boat was introduced. In those early days of innovation, Donald Campbell of speed record fame headed up the company, but manufacture of boats was eventually discontinued, leaving the waterjet range as a valuable addition to the Dowty product range, which was eventually sold off to become Ultra Dynamics Limited.
Over the years the company has been a successful innovator, developing specialist markets for waterjet applications and became the major supplier to the military sector for amphibious vehicles. Both pod units and hull inserted waterjets have been engineered specifically for this market sector and a strong presence has been developed with navies, coastguards and government agencies world-wide , supplying waterjets for pilot boats, rigid inflatables and offshore patrol vessels.
In the mid 1990s when the business became an independent company specialising in waterjets, the UltraJet range of high performance waterjets and control systems was introduced. Since introducing the UltraJet range steady progress has been made building up an impressive reference list of successful applications in the commercial workboat and leisure sectors. Today more than 16,000 UltraJets have been delivered world-wide.
Comparing waterjets size for size, UltraJets due to their special impeller design provide unrivalled thrust and acceleration to cruise speed. Design work undertaken in conjunction with the National Engineering Design Laboratory established a design that delivers both high thrust and high-speed. Ultra believe this, with a total commitment to quality in design and manufacture has produced a waterjet package of total integrity unsurpassed in the market place.
Ultra Dynamics have just introduced the New JetMaster Joystick control System driven by a programmable logic controller (PLC) which offers their customers unparalleled manoeuvring power, harnessing the full benefits of waterjets, at a budget price. The company has emphasised complete marine waterjet propulsion systems since 1989 and has been the leader in joystick control systems since 1995. The new JetMaster system provides features previously only available on larger more expensive ship-board systems.
Ultra’s investment in this area reflects the increasing importance of flexible, user-friendly and efficient control systems on board marine craft.
Ultra Dynamics report that one of the largest growth market in recent years for UltraJets has been the more demanding market of Norway where boat builders are continually looking for superior products for their boats and are willing to try other manufacturers products to meet this aim.
The company’s reputation in this market has risen through successful applications and UltraJet have gained market share very quickly through word of mouth.
Ultra has also received orders and delivered UltraJets for a wide range of projects around the world and at present has good visibility of their growth through their current full order book.
Ultra Dynamics are also continually upgrading their waterjets with the introduction of the UJ376 and UJ451 to the range and with the first new UJ410 installations being complete in 2007. Ultra Dynamics waterjets are also getting bigger having introduced the UltraJet 575 in 2004, the company at the request of its customers is now bringing the UltraJet 650 to the market place.
Trends over the last 10 years show that waterjets have still a lot more growth potential and in addition to growth in the UK and Norwegian market Ultra is seeing penetration into the Baltic, Russia and Far East.
UltraJet products are exported world-wide through a distribution network that includes a sister company in the USA in Columbus, Ohio.
