TRANSTEC 2010 PREVIEW REVEALS BIG BUSINESS AND TRADE OPPORTUNITIES FOR RUSSIAN AND FOREIGN PORTS INDUSTRIES
The impressive line-up of executive Speakers at the TRANSTEC 2010 Preview in St Petersburg, March 2010 reflected the importance of the TRANSTEC 2010 Exhibition and Conference organised for 5-7 October this year.
Addressing almost 100 guests from the foreign and Russian transport and trade communities the Panel Chairman Mr Oleg Terekhov (President of ASOP, the Russian Association of Commercial Sea-Ports) stated.
“The TRANSTEC Exhibition, organized in Russia since 1994 has become one of the most significant events with direct influence for the development of the transport system of the whole Euro-Asian Continent.
The TRANSTEC topics hit directly the task of the development of the trade between Russia, EU and Asia. For example, the realization of the project of the North Transport Corridor, supported by European Union, will benefit the creation of the united transport system of ports and infrastructure of Russia and North Europe. The participants of the project include some 20 participants from different countries including Russia (Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Yamalo-Nenets Region) UK, Iceland, Greenland, Norway
Another priority topic is to develop North-South transportation via sea ports and inland waterways and the creation of the new transport knot (cross-roads) of transportation between the EU and South-East Asia on the Russian Black Sea coast near Rostov-on-Don
Russian sea ports process 60% of the export-import cargo flows of Russia, now the port transportation volume has increased 3.5 times comparing with the year 1990. Total cargo turnover of Russia actually puts Russia on the 8-th place in the world in cargo flow figures. By 2015 Russia will increase cargo flows another 1.5 times
ASOP sees the TRANSTEC Exhibition and Port Conference as a platform for the cooperation with International Association of Ports and Harbors and the European Sea Port Organisation and appreciates their support of the Event produced by the Secretaries General of these distinguished Associations as well as with direct participants from port industry and port equipment production. TRANSTEC is also the venue to develop cooperation between the Russian and International Ports Sectors”
Mr Terekhov was joined on the Panel by Mr. V. Zubkov, SOROSS, Union of Russian Ship-Owners who summarized the view of his Union in his presentation.
“The TRANSTEC concept and conference discussions involve the direct influence of port operations and infrastructure on sea, river, road and railway transportation development.
SOROSS Union of Ship-Owners proposes the Exhibition and Conference should also address the topics of the modern technologies of cargo processing and services in ports which will accelerate the time of the cargo processing to and from ships in the ports.
SOROSS is interested to welcome international participants displaying modern international technologies of such cargo processing which are already developed in major international ports.
One important problem is the cooperation and integration of different types of transport sectors in transport knots and multi-modal transportation. We have to develop ports to reduce transport costs which now represent 10-15% of total operational costs
The Russian and international shipping fleet is technically more developed than the ports infrastructure, technologies and equipment. Russian ports with international cooperation should improve their services to meet the demands for different vessel types of the latest modern generation.
Port services and port operations at international technical and management levels is a key task for this.
SOROSS is interested that major Russian and international Port Users including Owners and Producers of cargoes and other Transport Operators e.g. Rail, Road, Air, Logistics should join the Exhibition along with Shipping Companies such as SOVCOMFLOT, Maersk Line, Orient Overseas Container Line, Hanjin Shipping Ltd, China Ocean Shipping Company who may share their experiences of global port services with domestic Russian companies.
SOROSS proposes to invite their valued Port partners to the TRANSTEC Programme including the Ports of Kotka, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Ningbo (China) to discuss their experiences in the technical services and future cooperation with Russian ports and ship owners”
The Panel also welcomed Mr N.G. Smirnov, President of the Association of Inland Waterways Shipping Companies who had announced in his Letter of Invitation to the TRANSTEC 2010 Event:
“Russia has the world’s largest system of inland water-ways, the European part of Russia alone has deep water inland waterways systems with 6,500 kilometers length with potential for more efficient operation following the future opening of Russian inland waterways to ships flying international flags.
About 10% of international cargo flows will be realized via this system.
The Government of RF Programme for development of inland waterways 2010-2015 approves the decision to develop the transport infrastructure of inland waterways and for the reconstruction of areas which now impose limitations on the increased capacity of cargo flows. This will allow unified dimensions for the inland waterways which are considered as international transport waterways and also provide reduced transport expenses to the trade market.
The TRANSTEC Exhibition and “Future of Russian Ports” Conference will increase the attractiveness of the Russian transport system and promote the development of Russian inland and short sea shipping fleet operations as a part of transport and transit potential.
Such a Forum will promote the development of the big investment projects in inland waterways with international significance and will renew the cargo and passenger transport fleet and accelerate development, construction and reconstruction of the river and river-mouth port infrastructure and also safety in inland waterways”
During his presentation to the TRANSTEC Preview Mr Smirnov also identified the needs for major dredging projects and underlined the future potential of inland waterways for large scale carriage of container traffic.
Other distinguished Speakers included Ms T.I. Chekalova, Secretary to the Maritime Council of the Government of St Petersburg who delivered the Message of Support for TRANSTEC from the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, Mr I.E. Levitin.
“The TRANSTEC Exhibition organized in St.Petersburg- the Maritime Capital of Russia- every year becomes the more popular platform to demonstrate modern technologies of transportation, the possibility to attract greater transit cargo flows, new projects for the reconstruction and modernization of the transport infrastructure of Russia with the increasing involvement of national and foreign investments.
The Second International Conference "Future of Russian Ports" will benefit the development of the potential of Russia in sea transportation as the important element of the foreign trade and international economic cooperation and will give to participants the possibility to discuss hot issues of transport and logistics cooperation.
Signed: I.E. Levitin, Minister of Transport
Moscow, 4th March 2010”
