Three new SAILORR ATEX portables including the first GMDSS ATEX on the market
Thrane & Thrane's SAILOR SP3500 portable series is growing with the addition of three ATEX certified models, designed specifically for use in hazardous marine environments. These incredibly robust portables, which expand the choice in the SP3500 range to seven different models, will be shown for the first time on the Thrane & Thrane booth at SMM 2008.
Fully waterproof, the ATEX versions of the SAILOR SP3500 portable series are built specifically for use at sea, and can be trusted to provide reliable communication whatever the conditions. There are three high-quality, durable ATEX models available, which in addition to offering superb value, are specifically designed for use in hazardous environments such as on board tankers and offshore installations. The SAILOR SP3530 VHF ATEX, SAILOR SP3540 VHF GMDSS ATEX and SAILOR SP3560 UHF ATEX are ATEX approved to: II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.
The SAILOR SP3540 VHF ATEX GMDSS is unique in that it is the only ATEX certified portable VHF available to offer GMDSS functionality, so it can be used for both on board communication and to fulfill safety requirements if an incident should occur. To ensure it meets GMDSS requirements it is shipped with a Lithium battery, making it ready for use straight out of the box.
All three SAILOR ATEX portables feature powerful transceivers and high quality audio ensuring that all parties can be heard loud and clear even when working in windy and noisy conditions and the SAILOR name instils confidence that these portables were built for the demanding job at sea, with such features as:
Robust design
Waterproof (IP67)
Large display
Excellent sound
Large tactile buttons
Ribbed grip
Interface to external accessories
With large tactile buttons and control knobs combined with a user-friendly interface, operation of the SAILOR SP3500 ATEX portables could not be simpler, and when in the middle of a vital operation, be it an oil spill clean-up, bunkering operation or hazardous cargo transfer, complicated operation of a portable radio is the last thing that is needed. Every SAILOR SP3500 series portable, including the new ATEX models, also comes with a large, easy to read display with a red backlight to protect night vision.
The new SAILOR ATEX portables from Thrane & Thrane join the existing SAILOR SP3500 range, which already includes models designed for commercial shipping, workboat and professional fishing applications:
SAILOR SP3510 Portable VHF,SAILOR SP3515 Portable VHF with scrambler and CTCSS, SAILOR SP3520 Portable VHF GMDSS and SAILOR SP3550 Portable UHF
NEW SAILORR FLEETBROADBAND TERMINAL FOR FORTHCOMING INMARSAT FB150 SERVICE
Cost-effective terminal developed for Inmarsat's newly announced entry-level FleetBroadband service
Thrane & Thrane has unveiled a new terminal in its SAILOR FleetBroadband product portfolio, for use with the forthcoming Inmarsat FB150 service. The new entry-level FleetBroadband service offers globally deployable, combined voice and data service targeted at small vessels and is due to be available by mid-2009.
The new FB150 service has been established to provide a low-cost means for leisure and smaller fishing and commercial vessels to take advantage of the IP data and high quality voice communication and SMS provided by FleetBroadband.
The new SAILOR 150 FleetBroadband terminal will offer 150kbps IP data and simultaneous landline quality voice, ensuring that a new class of user can benefit from the FleetBroadband revolution. It enables broadband internet browsing and downloading with the cost-effective airtime that has proven vital to the fast uptake of the FleetBroadband service since its introduction in November 2007.
"Feedback on our FleetBroadband terminals has so far been extremely positive with their reliability and ease of use highlighted by many customers. Our development team has ensured that these key attributes will be carried across to the new SAILOR 150 FleetBroadband terminal," comments Casper Jensen, Director, Maritime Global Marketing, Thrane & Thrane.
The new SAILOR 150 FleetBroadband is based on the same design values as the SAILOR 500 and 250 FleetBroadband terminals, ensuring that the smaller vessels the new service is aimed at benefit from the same reliability and ease of use that the high-end SAILOR FleetBroadband systems offer. It also features a compact dome and below deck unit for simple installation.
"Thanks to our close collaboration with Inmarsat we were first to market with the SAILOR 500 and 250 FleetBroadband terminals, and we are committed to ensuring cost-effective, high quality terminals are available for when the new FB150 service goes live next year," says Casper Jensen.

THRANE & THRANE EXPANDS VOLVO OCEAN RACE SPONSORSHIP WITH EXPLORERR TERMINAL PACKAGE
SMM 2008, 23-26 September, Hall B6, Booth 333
Inmarsat land systems for backup and extended leg-start coverage
Thrane & Thrane is ensuring that the legion of Volvo Ocean Race fans around the world receive even better television coverage by extending its sponsorship offering to include land based EXPLORER 700 BGAN terminals in addition to the SAILOR FleetBroadband, Fleet and radio communications package already in place for the October 4th 2008 start in Alicante.
Thrane & Thrane has supplied two new EXPLORER 700 systems, one for use as back-up communication at the Volvo Ocean Race headquarters near Portsmouth, England, and one for mobile use by the official Volvo Ocean Race Broadcast Team who will be present in every race stopover. The mobile terminal will be part of the team's efforts to ensure full coverage from land as the boats disappear over the horizon at the start of each leg and also during the in-port race in Alicante.
"Offshore racing has exploded in popularity and the only way to satisfy the appetite for action from the millions of fans is to provide top-class television coverage. For that reason, the Broadcast Team has to have confidence in the equipment available. Based on our own experience and the performance of the Thrane & Thrane equipment throughout the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006, we are positive that the EXPLORER terminals are more than up to the job," comments Harold Andersen, Executive Editor, Volvo Ocean Race Broadcast Team.
The EXPLORER 700 terminals were supplied as an add-on to the Volvo Ocean Race sponsorship package announced in March 2008, which included delivery and service of the company's flagship marine terminal, SAILOR 500 FleetBroadband and a backup SAILOR Fleet33 for every race boat.
Additionally, each race boat and organiser's boat will also carry SAILOR VHF and MF/HF radios, ensuring that reliable radio communication is also available at all times.
"As one of the most extreme sporting events on the planet we couldn't resist the challenge of putting our systems to the ultimate test," said Walther Thygesen, CEO, Thrane & Thrane. "We received fantastic feedback from our Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006 sponsorship and are delighted to be able to expand on this for the next race, not only with our marine systems, but now also with our EXPLORER terminals for land-use. Television coverage is vital to the success of the Volvo Ocean Race and we are more than happy to play our part in ensuring that the fans get what they want."
Thrane & Thrane develops and manufacturers Inmarsat terminals for marine use under the brand SAILOR, land mobile use under the EXPLORER brand and aeronautical use as Thrane & Thrane.
INMARSAT BGAN RADIO ACCESS NETWORKS UPGRADE CONTRACT FOR THRANE & THRANE
Expanded capacity required to meet growing demand from BGAN users
Thrane & Thrane's systems division has been awarded a DKK 12.5 mil contract with Inmarsat to increase the capacity of the BGAN Radio Access Networks in Burum, Holland, and Fucino, Italy. The capacity increase is necessary to safeguard the high quality of BGAN as more and more users subscribe to the service.
The capacity upgrade that Thrane & Thrane's systems will enable is significant compared to the present capacity. With the upgrade complete, the Burum and Fucino stations will each be able to send and receive 456 carriers, compared to the current 264 carriers. This increases the traffic carrying capacity by almost 73%.
The introduction of FleetBroadband and SwiftBroadband together with land mobile terminals is driving the increasing demand for BGAN services. Thrane & Thrane is the leading supplier of BGAN capable terminals and the successful continued introduction of new terminal models, such as the recent launch of the EXPLORER 727 for on-the-move communication on land, stimulates the requirement for higher infrastructure capacity.
Thrane & Thrane's systems division is a leading player in the design, development, manufacturing and selling of satellite access stations and associate infrastructure equipment. The company has been a key contractor for Inmarsat in this key business area since 1990, delivering high quality turnkey solutions; satellite access stations including interface to terrestrial networks, large disc antennas, RF equipment and access control and signaling equipment.
