SUNY Maritime Professors Take Part in Marine Technology Conference, Discuss Future of Maritime Transportation

The first Global Conference on Innovation in Marine Technology and the Future of Maritime Transportation was the focus of a major international educational conference held at Istanbul Technical University in Istanbul, Turkey, in late 2010. The forum brought together leading maritime educators from around the world. It was designed to “open new horizons for the 21st century from the perspective of knowledge and innovation,” according to conference organizers.

Maritime professor Dr. Shmuel Yahalom was one of 16 scholars who served on the International Scientific Board for the conference. Dr. Yahalom presented the keynote address during a luncheon session on the topic of “Safety and Security in the Maritime Sector” during a day session. He was joined at the three-day event by four fellow Maritime faculty members: Dr. Karen Markoe, Chairman of Maritime’s Humanities Department, who presented a paper on “The role of Humanities in Educating Officers for the 21st Century;” Maritime professor Yaqub Amani, who spoke on the topic of “A Pioneering Hydrogen Fueled Cargo Ship” and Maritime professor Gregory Hanchrow who addressed the topic of “Narrowing the Gulf Between Shipboard and Shoreside Management, Moving from Compliance to Commitment.”SUNY Maritime Library Director and Department Chair Constantia Constantinou also presented a paper during the conference on the topic of “Measuring Maritime Student Expectations and Satisfaction Through Library Performance Assessment at SUNY Maritime College.”



In all, there were 11 academic sessions during the international meeting that covered the topics of: Knowledge-based Innovation in 21st Century and the Maritime Sector; Global Maritime Strategies; New Technologies in Marine Engineering; Information and Communication Technologies and the Maritime Sector; Ship-Shore Integration; Officers of the 21st Century; Environmental Protection and the Maritime Sector; Safety & Security in the Maritime Sector; Innovative Ship Design & Construction Technologies; Legal Framework for the Seas, and International Maritime Conventions and Istanbul - A Historic Maritime City.

The SUNY Maritime professors were joined by fellow American academics from Stevens Institute of Technology; California Maritime Academy and Texas Tech University. European and Asian academics from Canada, China, France, Germany, Iran, Italy Japan, Korea, Norway, the Philippines, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey and the U.K also participated.
