Massachusetts Maritime Academy Announces Successful Launch of “Pollution Compliance for Seafarers”

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Available at no cost to maritime professionals for the first two years, students have an opportunity to earn up to fifteen college credits by completing the program, which is recognized and approved by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy is pleased to announce the successful launch of its new certificate program, Pollution Compliance for Seafarers, available at no cost to maritime professionals for the first two years. Funded by a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s “Seafarer’s Environmental Education Fund,” this online certificate program consists of five, three-credit undergraduate courses leading to a certificate in pollution compliance. Students have an opportunity to earn up to fifteen college credits by completing the program, which is recognized and approved by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education.

Conducted in an online format readily accessible to mariners both at sea and ashore, each eight-week course is designed to address marine pollution issues relevant to the maritime industry. The program represents an excellent professional development opportunity for seafarers, and it offers corporations an opportunity to demonstrate a commitment to the marine environment.

Courses train seafarers to recognize the origins and destructive consequences of ship-based pollution and provide them with effective means for detecting, preventing, and reporting pollution sources. The following five courses, all required to earn the certificate in pollution compliance, are being offered through the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education and taught by faculty in Marine Safety and Environmental Protection, Marine Engineering, and Marine Transportation Departments:

• Ecological Consequences of Marine Pollution (3 college credits)
• Marine Pollution and Vessel Engineering Systems (3 college credits)
• Marine Pollution and Deck Operations (3 college credits)
• Legal Issues in Marine Pollution (3 college credits)
• Environmental Communication in the Maritime Industry (3 college credits)

All tuition, amounting to $3,060, will be paid by the grant for the first two years of the program. Registration for the program is ongoing, with enrollment limited to 20 students per class. Individuals interested in learning more about this opportunity can visit our website at www.maritime.edu/seafarers or send an inquiry by e-mail to seafarers@maritime.edu.
