• Alakai Hawaii Superferry equipped with Night Navigator 8540
July 26, 2007
Vancouver, B.C. - Current Corporation has confirmed the installation of a U.S. Coast Guard approved Night Navigator 8540 camera system onboard the Auto Express 107 Alakai, the first Hawaiian Superferry.
Launched at Austal USA on January 18th, 2007, the Alakai is the largest Austal catamaran built to date. The 106.5 meter high speed aluminum vehicle-passenger catamaran is powered by four MTU 20V 8000 M70 diesel engines and boasts a carrying capacity of 866 passengers and up to 282 cars. It will provide services connecting Honolulu to Maui and Kauai in three hours and from Honolulu to the Big Island in approximately four hours, at speeds up to 35 knots.
The Night Navigator 8540 is a robust all weather system incorporating a gated image intensified camera and a high speed lens to gather infrared light. During periods of extreme darkness, the infrared searchlight can be used to illuminate up to 2000 meters ahead of the vessel. It is this invaluable feature, a crisp and accurate day-like view for operators that allows them to identify potential obstacles in the water. The Night Navigator 8540 is approved for the HSC code, holding both DNV and RINA certificates and the recently acquired U.S. Coastguard certification.
The Night Navigator will prove beneficial for the ship’s safe operation at night, while underway during darkness. The Night Navigator is a system that will assist the operators in the detecting, and thus avoiding the whales and other objects, as well as prove valuable in assisting search and rescue operations at night.
A second Night Navigator contract has already been confirmed for the Hawaii Superferry 2, which will be launch in the early half of 2009.
• Night Navigator 8540 installed on Speedrunner II, Aegean Speed Lines’ most recent addition
July 27, 2007
Vancouver, B.C. - Current Corporation has confirmed the installation of the Night Navigator 8540 camera system onboard the Speedrunner II, through their Greek distributor, Marel Electronics S.A. The Speedrunner II is the latest addition to the Aegean Speed Lines fast ferry fleet.
The Night Navigator 8540 is a robust all weather system incorporating a gated image intensified camera and a high speed lens to gather infrared light. The infrared searchlight can be used to illuminate up to 2000 meters ahead of the vessel, providing invaluable assistance in obstacle detection and collision prevention.
The Night Navigator will prove beneficial for the ship’s safe operation at night, while underway during darkness. The system will allow the crew to visualize potential obstructions and emerging rocks that are imbedded throughout the Aegean and Mediterranean waters and chartered routes.
The Night Navigator 8540, approved for the HSC code: holding DNV, RINA and U.S. Coastguard certification, will set precedence, improving the safety and the security of the passengers and crew.
The high speed vessel, which started its scheduled itineraries earlier this month, will provide a fast alternative to the existing ferry routes. As tourism continues to grow on many of the Greek islands the Speedrunner II will facilitate not only transportation for the tourists from the country’s major airports to holiday destinations, but also provide a vital link for local inhabitants who work and live on the islands.
