• Mad Rock Wins Statendam Hook Replacement
Mad Rock Marine Solutions, a privately owned Canadian company in Newfoundland and Labrador, and a world leader in emergency evacuation technologies has announced their second successful order with Holland America Line. They will replace the M/V STATENDAM’s older lifeboat hooks with their “fail-closed” hook design in December 2007, just weeks after winning an order for M/V PRINSENDAM. Since gaining type approval from Lloyds, the “ROC-LOC 12” has developed market recognition for its stainless steel construction, high reliability, and minimum maintenance requirements. In recent discussions at IMO the use of “fail-closed” hooks was promoted as a safer alternative to the more common “fail-open” hook designs in reducing deaths and serious injuries resulting from lifeboat accidents. MCA, Intertanko, and other shipping interests have indicated their preference for the “fail-safe” designs.
“We took an engineer’s approach to hook design by analyzing the causes of lifeboat accidents. We looked at the procedures, materials, and other contributory factors of hook failures and for us the answer was obvious. Use better materials and a simpler design and allow open sourcing for replacement parts. There is no sense over complicating the mechanism, and having to replace an entire hook when all you need is a small part. That’s been our approach all along and it seems the market is responding” said Dean Pelley, CEO of Mad Rock. Mad Rock has also looked closely at the human element and provides state of the art training materials for crew orientation and training. Our hook systems are supported by manuals and training materials that are intended to be understood by anyone. We supplement our staff certification programs, with self-paced computer based training modules developed by Cap Sante International.”
Cap Sante International, a global 3rd party provider of lifeboat and marine safety services and products, have developed the “Just in Time”™ training applications which can be deployed via a variety of delivery methods including web-enabled application, CD Rom or handheld video i-Pods™. Based on highly effective training programs developed in Boeing and other major manufacturing companies the “Just in Time”™ training applications allow customized process specific training programs that features real-time “podcast” updates for discrete distribution. “This training solution was a perfect fit for Mad Rock’s focus on improving the safe use of lifeboat hook systems” said Pelley.
