June 18, 2007; New Port RI: A group of sixteen pilots from Jacobsen Pilot Services, Inc. (JPS) of Long Beach and Los Angles Harbors completed a two day Bridge Resource Management (BRM) Refresher course for pilots. The courses were conducted in the conference room at JPS headquarters, with two courses being conducted over a four day period 14 - 17 may 2007. The course is designed to reinforce and refresh the principles of BRM and relies heavily on the examination of case studies.
Seminar topics include Situational Awareness, Error Chains and Error Chain Analysis, Stress and Fatigue, Communications, Decision Making, Leadership and Teamwork, Voyage Planning, Officer of the Watch requirements specified by the Standards for Training and Certification of Watchstanders (STCW), the Law, and Master/Pilot Relationship. The course was facilitated by Captain W. F. Bronaugh Jr., a veteran BRM instructor from MarineSafety International, in collaboration with Captain Victor J. Schisler, Senior Jacobsen Pilot.
Captain Tom Jacobsen, President of JPS, remarked in an email to MarineSafety “Again, many thanks for the fantastic Bridge Resource Management training. All of our Pilots enjoyed your two day class, especially the case studies. I believe these types of classes keep our Pilots sharp and prevent us from becoming complacent in our job.”
