Maxwell Introduces a Retractable Vertical Capstan

Superyacht sailboat and motor yacht owners have long desired a capstan that is capable of being retracted when not in use in order to provide an uncluttered deck area, whether it be located on the foredeck of a sailboat or installed in the mid ship and/or stern areas of a powered vessel. Maxwell has developed an inspired solution which allows for a retractable unit every bit as functional and robust as a non-retractable capstan.

A retractable capstan is seen as more than just a clever device; it is seen as a means of guaranteeing unobstructed working and leisure deck areas aboard the vessel. When in the fully operational “UP” position the Maxwell Retractable Vertical Capstan performs above the exacting performance criteria of the conventional Maxwell VC4000 capstan. When fully retracted, the top of the capstan drum is virtually flush with the deck.

The entire retractable capstan has been designed not only for superb functionality, but with the aim that aesthetics aboard any Superyacht are also paramount. The top of the capstan drum is pleasing to the eye and has been patterned to provide a non-skid surface when flush with the deck, in the fully “DOWN” position.

The Maxwell RVC is constructed from marine grade stainless steel and bronze components and incorporates self lubricating bearings. The substantial load bearing, lead screw lifting mechanism ensures smooth and consistent up/down operation while maintaining maximum warping capability when the capstan drum is fully extended.

By incorporating the minimal number of operating parts encapsulated in a below deck monocoque construction, rigidity, durability and environmental protection are ensured.

Operation of the RVC is as simple and straightforward as any conventional capstan. The unit is operated by two footswitches; one activates the “UP” function and also the drum rotation when fully extended into the rope warping position. The other footswitch retracts the drum into its fully flush position. Adjustment and maintenance of the Maxwell Retractable Capstan is simple and straightforward utilising a basic tool kit, with minimal disassembly of the unit.
