ISP Redesigned Lifejacket Range at SMM 2014

Global maritime firm International Safety Products (ISP) will be launching a redesigned package of lifejackets at this year’s Shipbuilding, Maritime and Machinery (SMM) trade show in Germany.

The Liverpool firm, which is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of marine inflatable lifejackets, is exhibiting at stand number B1.OG / 602 as part of the British Maritime Federation (BMF) showcase. ISP head of sales Andy Scott said the firm will be using the platform to unveil new be-spoke versions of the Challenger Flexi-wing 150N, Challenger Interlock 275N and Challenger Worksafe Pro 170N lifejackets.

The lifejackets now have additional design options to provide even greater comfort, particularly for people working across the maritime sector.

Mr Scott said many manufacturers are highlighting 275N SOLAS/MED (Safety Of Life At Sea Maritime Equipment Directive) lifejackets as being better for working personnel than 150N SOLAS/MED lifejackets, whereas the opposite is true in many situations.

ISP is one of few firms able to manufacture and supply SOLAS/MED approved 150N lifejackets (the Challenger Flexi-wing) - which are a more compact and lighter alternative to 275N models.

“The SOLAS/MED test requirements are extremely demanding,” said Mr Scott. “This may be the reason that other firms are placing greater emphasis on the 275N models, as they are unable to achieve the requirements with a 150N version.

“ISP has extensive experience in the industry and world class design and manufacturing capability. This combination has enabled us to produce the Challenger Flexi-Wing 150N lifejackets, as well as the proven and highly used Challenger Interlock 275N lifejacket.

“The principal of a 275N lifejacket is that it gives improved buoyancy and turning motion when personnel are working offshore wearing large amounts of clothing or survival suits. However, in the vast majority of cases, it simply isn’t necessary and can be cumbersome - since they are always larger and heavier to wear than a 150N lifejacket.

“ISP’s Challenger Interlock 275N is recognised as one of the best performing lifejackets for self righting an individual when they are wearing immersion suits and is specified by many of the world’s leading offshore operators. As the marine safety industry is aware, it is important to specify the correct equipment for the job, and therefore we are proud to be able to offer our customers, either solution - 150N or 275N.

“SMM Hamburg is one of the world’s leading maritime industry fairs for shipbuilders, shipowners and suppliers, to discuss new technologies and innovative ship projects and to take action. It provides a first class setting to launch our redesigned range of lifejackets which deliver even greater benefits to personnel working across the maritime sector.”

ISP’s Challenger Flexi-wing 150N lifejacket, in addition to the standard model, is available with a be-spoke, ergonomic cover complete with a zipped closure and a neoprene neck for comfort.

Its unique flexi-wing bladder design boosts performance in the water. It raises the user’s mouth higher above the water level and also provides better floatation angles. The interlocking lobe (patented) design self-rights the wearer in less than five seconds and creates an effective wave barrier. This stops water from being channeled into the airways.

It is approved to SOLAS/MED 2010 and the tailored neck design further provides vital support to the head and neck, even to an unconscious user.

Additional models on display from ISP’s SOLAS range will include the Challenger Interlock 275 - which features the unique interlocking lobe bladder design - and the Challenger Aqua Junior 100.

“We have redesigned our Challenger Worksafe Pro 170 lifejacket which now has a slimmer fit, zipped cover and storm flap,” said Mr Scott. “It has a mesh back for greater comfort and breathability. This makes it an excellent constant wear working lifejacket and is also fitted with an interlocking bladder.”

SMM Hamburg runs from 9-12 September. More than 50,000 visitors are expected through the gates over the four days, from all continents.

“ISP is a proud British manufacturer,” said Mr Scott. SMM Hamburg will provide an opportunity to communicate the key benefits of our products such as durability and reliability, due to the technology and materials we use.

“We are always searching for ways to improve our service. Evidence of this can be seen in our latest modifications. ISP also places great importance on delivering bespoke products – meeting the individual requirements of each client.”
