Jama Idle Ibrahim was sentenced to 30 years in prison Monday after admitting his role in the April 10 attack on a U.S. Navy ship off the Somali coast.
The U.S. District Court in Norfolk, VA sentenced Ibrahim after he plead guilty to the following charges: an attack to plunder a vessel, an act of violence against persons on a vessel, and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.
Six Somali nationals were arrested in April for attacking the USS Ashland, which they claim they mistook for a merchant vessel.
The other five men face trial for similar charges.
