Student Dies After Cruise Ship Fall

A 20-year-old Clemson University student died on Monday morning after falling aboard a Carnival cruise ship at PortMiami.

Police say a preliminary investigation revealed that Kendall Wernet, a passenger aboard the ship, had climbed the ship's forward mast when he fell a distance equal to two decks on the ship. He was transported to Ryder Trauma Center where his injuries proved fatal.

A police report states that no foul play is suspected. Investigators say the death appears to be accidental caused by blunt force trauma to the head. A toxicology report is being conducted, although results could take up to a month.

Carnival Cruise Lines released the following statement regarding the incident: "Earlier this morning as the Carnival Ecstasy was approaching PortMiami, a 20-year-old male guest entered a restricted area and climbed up onto the ship's forward mast. He subsequently fell and landed on the deck. He was initially treated by the ship's medical team and later transferred to a local trauma center in Miami. Unfortunately, he has passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time."
