Mickey Cook Joins Horizon Shipbuilding

Mickey Cook has joined the Horizon Shipbuilding as the vice president of operations for the Bayou La Batre shipyard.

Cook, one of the founders of C & G Boatworks, where he served as general manager, brings 38 years of experience in the shipbuilding industry to his current position at Horizon. His many years of experience and relationships with others in the industry are an asset that will allow Horizon to better serve our customers and the marine industry as well as aid in the growth of Horizon Shipbuilding. Travis Short, owner of Horizon, has had a long standing friendship and working relationship with Cook that goes back for decades.

Cook has held positions in all aspects of shipbuilding, including ship repair estimator, project engineer, project coordinator, yard superintendent, operations manager and assistant general manager.

Last year the company tripled its production capacity with the development of a “West Yard” that added approximately 22 acres to Horizon’s footprint, including 3,000’ of waterfront, three production bays, as well as multiple launchways.

Horizon Shipbuilding is located on the southwestern coast of Alabama about 30 miles from the port of Mobile. The company designs, builds and repair ships, boats, and barges up to 300 feet in length and 1500 tons launch weight. Its customer base includes the offshore oil industry, cruise and diving industry, tug and barge operators, and specialized craft for the United States and foreign governments.
