Five Dead, 10 Injured at Alang Shipbreaker

Five people were killed and at least 10 injured on Saturday after an explosion in the chemical tanker Perin which was being dismantled at an Alang shipbreaking yard in India.

The explosion was triggered by a gas leak. The injured were rushed to a private hospital in Bhavnagar, about 50 km from the yard.

When the laborers were cutting through the metal near the engine room, the gas trapped between the engine room and the compartment below leaked, causing the explosion.

The tanker has been at the yard for three months, so it is surprising the gas remained trapped, an official said. The shipbreaker, Paras Steel Corporation, has confirmed the incident.
